Rough, Milled, & Dimensioned Lumber

Keystone Wood Specialties offers lumber for sale to wholesale customers. When you buy rough or milled lumber from Keystone, you’ll avoid the frustration of sorting through layers of warped and twisted material, because you’re getting the same high quality lumber we use in our cabinet doors and high-end components. You can also save time by having Keystone rip, plane, sand or S4S material to your exact tolerances.

Lumber is available by preorders and scheduled pickups at our Lancaster facility.

  • Lumber can be ordered on its own.
  • Lumber can be purchased with a current door order. This offers a convenient one-stop shop and helps ensure a consistent color and grain between the lumber and your components.

Lumber Specs

With the exception of exotic species such as Mahogany, Keystone’s hardwood lumber is domestically sourced from regions that are known for exceptional color sorts by species and is kiln dried to 6% – 8% for use in cabinet doors and furniture.

Unless otherwise specified:

  • All species are FAS/Prime
  • Board foot lumber is random width greater than 5” and random length between 8’ – 12’ (most lumber will be between 10’ – 12’).

Milling Options:

Rough – no surfacing or ripping. Sold by board foot.
S2S – surfaced 2 sides, no ripping. Sold by board foot.
S2SR1E – surfaced 2 sides and straight line ripped 1 edge. Sold by gross board foot.
S2SR2E – surfaced 2 sides and straight line ripped 2 edges. Sold by gross board foot.
S4S
– surfaced 4 sides. Dimensioned through moulder to your specified width and thickness. Sold by lineal foot (random length). Wide belt sanding optional. Shipping may be available in 8ft lengths.
Solid Stock – dimensioned to your specified width, length, and thickness and sanded. Sold by the piece. Available unfinished, polish sanded, or finished in any paint or stain color. Solid stock wood species have different specifications than lumber – Click here. Shipping available.

Aromatic Cedar (1 Common & Better) – Strong characteristics of aromatic cedar include its pleasant aroma and deep reddish-brown hue. Knots and pale yellow to white sapwood are acceptable and are present throughout. Knots vary in size and may be open, forming deep holes.

Alder (Superior/Prime) – Color ranges from light tan to reddish-brown, with almost no distinction between heartwood and sapwood. Alder has a fine texture with partly closed, straight grain similar to cherry.

Alder, Knotty (Prime) – Same as alder, except with more knots and burl. Knots vary in size or shape and may be open, forming deep holes.

Ash (FAS/Prime) – The color tones of ash consist of a wide range of cream to light brown with some dark streaks. Burl and pin knots are also characteristic of ash.

Call for availability.

Birch, Natural (FAS/Prime) – A mixture of sapwood and heartwood. Natural birch has a uniform, light reddish-brown appearance.

Birch, White (FAS/Prime) – A white to pale yellowish closed-grained wood, suitable for natural finish as well as light to dark stains.

Cherry (FAS/Prime) – Cherry has a light pinkish-brown heartwood and white sapwood. Exposure to light causes cherry to darken with age, revealing a deep reddish-brown tone. Gum pockets are a natural characteristic of cherry.

Hickory (FAS/Prime) – Unlike most other wood species, hickory has a unique grain pattern and variety of color tones all its own. Our hickory has some knots and lots of character.

Mahogany (FAS/Prime) – Color varies from golden brown to light reddish color tones. Mahogany has occasional pin knots or burl.

Maple, Hard (FAS/Prime) – Maple is a light brown to creamy tan wood with a subtle grain pattern and is suitable for light to dark stains.

Maple, Soft (FAS/Prime) – Soft maple has a range of creamy white to brown to gray color tones. Its workability, durability, and cost make it a great option for paint grade material.

Pine (C & Better) – Pale white to yellow with an occasional reddish tinge. Kiln dried to 6% – 8% for use in indoor cabinets and furniture.

Pine, Knotty (Furniture grade) – Our knotty pine, a New England furniture grade, has tight red knots and is suitable for rustic-style cabinetry.

Poplar (FAS/Prime) – A soft hardwood, it has a pale yellowish to white color with some green and brown mineral. Typically used as a paint grade.

Red Oak (FAS/Prime) – Red oak is known for its consistent reddish-brown heartwood and tight grain pattern. Its sapwood is white to light brown.

Sapele (FAS/Prime) – Sapele is known for a variety of figured grain patterns, including the striped/ribbon pattern which is found on quartersawn boards. Its heartwood is golden to dark reddish-brown.

Walnut, Steamed (FAS/Prime) – Walnut is well loved for its exceptional dark lustre and rich, smooth grain. Our black walnut is steamed to soften the contrast between its dark heartwood and bright white sapwood. Clear heartwood available.

White Oak, Plainsawn (FAS/Prime) –  A tight open-grained wood with light brown to greenish-gray color tones. Pin knots and burl are also characteristics of white oak. Plainsawn white oak has some straight grain as well as the typical cathedral grain pattern.

Call for availability.

White Oak, Quartersawn (FAS/Prime) – Quartersawn is different than plainsawn only in the way it is cut at the sawmill. Quartersawn is cut radially to the rings or parallel to the rays and produces an edge-grained appearance and is especially suited for reproductions of furniture or cabinetry.

Call for availability.

White Oak, Rift Cut (FAS/Prime) – Rift cut, like quartersawn oak, is different than plainsawn only in the way it is cut at the sawmill. Plainsawn has growth rings that are less than 30˚. Rift cut lumber has growth rings that have a range of 30˚ to 60˚, producing a tight vertical grain.
