How to Use Standard Hinges with Thick Cabinet Doors

What are Thick Cabinet Doors and Why Use Them?

Typically cabinet doors that are 1″ thick  or greater are considered thick doors, and there are some strong advantages to choosing thick doors for your cabinetry design.

Since thick doors are more durable, they will tend to last longer than standard cabinet doors when used in high-traffic rooms like kitchens or bathrooms, because they can better withstand the daily opening and closing and overall wear and tear that comes with those types of environments.

From an aesthetic point of view, thick cabinet doors tend to create a higher-end look and feel to the cabinetry design. Thicker versions of Narrow Shaker or Skinny Shaker cabinet doors are becoming more desirable for achieving a sleek modern look that still feels solid and timeless.

Thick Door Hinge Challenges

One drawback with using thicker doors is that they often require the use of specific Thick Door Hinges. These hinges can be costly and prevent the cabinet door from fully opening which will limit the access to the interior of the cabinet. As a remodeler, the ease of use that comes with standard door hinges like Compact Blumotion can make working with Thick Door Hinges a frustrating experience that you’re rather avoid.

An Easier Thick Door Hinge Option

Keystone has created a very easy workaround to this issue with a custom restrictor clip. We pair our custom clip with a standard soft close door hinge specifically for use with thick doors, so you can use a hinge that you regularly work with. This clip allows the Compact Blumotion hinge to be adjusted to create the clearance needed between the door edge and the cabinet face. Even better, these custom restrictor clips allow the thick door to open to 98 degrees.

When Should You Use Our Customized Restrictor Clip?

To take the guesswork out your next project, the guide below illustrates the clearance needed for different door thicknesses, and if the use of a customized restrictor clip is required.
